November Child Safety and Protection Month

Observing Child Safety and Protection Month

The fight for more regulations for child safety started in the 1970s after the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 (PPPA) was enacted as a result of the high number of children consuming dangerous household products. The act was proposed after a slue of accidental deaths of children 5 years old and under were ingesting household chemicals, prescription drugs, and other hazardous materials. Now, according to the CDC Childhood Injury Report, 12,175 children age 0 to 19 die in the US every year due to unintentional injury.

Complying with State by State Regulations

Every state where cannabis is legally consumed has legislature detailing the requirements that cannabis businesses have to abide by in terms of packaging. For example, Illinois requires cannabis products to be child and light-resistant as well as abide by the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. Colorado’s Medical Marijuana Code requires products to be packaged so that they cannot be easily opened by children, but also aren’t challenging for disabled or elderly consumers to access. When picking a cannabis packaging supplier it’s critical to remember that accessibility is essential. Some medical marijuana patients have conditions that inhibit their dexterity.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Child-Resistant Package

  • Does it meet ASTM standards?
  • Is it CPSC certified?
  • Is it FDA approved?
  • Is it accessible?
  • Is it tamper evident?
  • Is it light-resistant?
  • Does it meet the requirements of my state?

Labeling also plays a significant role in the fight for child safety. Cannabis manufacturers must be careful not to have anything on their label that could be attractive to minors or images that are commonly associated with minors.

What is ASTM approved?

ASTM International (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) is an international organization dedicated to defining and upholding standards of compliance for various materials, products, and services. Colorado residents, our child-resistant packaging also conforms with ASTM D3475-14. All of our Pinch N Slide Bag exit pouches meet the requirements set by the Colorado Revised Statues pursuant to C.R.S. 12-43.4-101.
